How to Identify Tequila Styles
Each style of tequila has its own look, aroma, and flavor profile. Here’s a quick guide to help you tell them apart.
- Blanco (Silver): Crystal clear with bright, fresh agave. Expect citrus, fruit, and a clean peppery finish.
- Gold (Joven): Dark golden with aromas of flan, honey, and spiced nuts. Flavors include roasted peppers, dried pineapple, and warming Mexican spices.
- Reposado: Light amber from resting in oak. Balanced notes of citrus, agave, fruit, honey, and a smooth vanilla finish.
- Añejo: Rich amber with oak-forward aromas like vanilla and raisin. Smooth and sweet with hints of caramel, melon, and spice.
- Extra Añejo: Deep golden amber with rich aromas of vanilla, pineapple, ginger, cola nut, and pepper. Full-bodied, layered, long, smooth, and spicy.
How to Taste Tequila
Slow down, sip, and let each tequila tell its story. Here’s a simple ritual to taste like a pro.
- Look at the color. Hold your glass to the light — Blanco stays clear, Reposado turns golden, and Añejos deepen toward amber.
- Swirl the glass. Gently swirl to release aromas and watch the “legs” (lagrimas). These show essential oils and richness.
- Smell the aromas. Bring the rim an inch from your nose and sniff lightly. Note agave, citrus, oak, spice, fruit, or vanilla.
- Sip and hold. Take a sip and let it rest on your tongue for about five seconds to coat your palate.
- Swallow and enjoy. Notice the finish — peppery, sweet, oaky, smoky, spicy, or smooth. Every tequila has its own personality.
